Evolution of the magma system of Pantelleria (Italy) from 190 ka to present

The eruptive history of Pantelleria has been marked by the eruption nine peralkaline ignimbrites, with inter-ignimbrite episodes from small, local volcanic centres. New whole-rock geochemical data are presented for seven ignimbrites and used published younger units to track compositional changes time. From ∼190 ka, silicic magmatism was dominated comenditic trachyte comendite compositions, evolving along generally similar liquid lines descent (LLOD). final ignimbrite, Green Tuff (∼46 ka), tapped a compositionally zoned pantelleritic upper reservoir trachytic mush zone. Younger (20–7 ka) relatively small scale, compositions earliest pre-Green ignimbrite (Zinedi). These suggest that reservoirs may have emplaced at deeper levels than reservoirs. While both types series evolved LLOD fractionation alkali feldspar, it is iron determines whether or pantellerite produced. were more oxidizing wetter, thus leading crystallization magnetite therefore iron.
